I have a small number of people that I've hired that don't currently work for me that I don't regret hiring.
It's almost gotten to the point where if you can spell BGP, SIP, or CPU, you're hired. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ken Hohhof" <khoh...@kwom.com> To: "AnimalFarm Microwave Users Group" <af@af.afmug.com> Sent: Sunday, March 23, 2025 5:16:33 PM Subject: Re: [AFMUG] OT Aviation EEOC has been with us since 1965. I first became a hiring manager in 1980, and went through corporate equal employment opportunity training. I worked for a division of Rockwell International which had a lot of government business, so it was taken to heart. But honestly, in times of full employment, it was viewed as a competitive advantage in order to have the widest field of candidates to hire. Companies tend to set criteria that actually have no relationship to being able to do the job. They also will hold out for the "best candidate" rather than one that is merely qualified. These are things we learned from the training. An example today that my son hits me with all the time is jobs that require a college degree for absolutely no reason, like to be a receptionist or warehouse worker, it's just a way to exclude people. The intent may not be to discriminate against people based on gender, race, ethnicity, or family income but that can be the outcome. Another example I have run into over the years is hiring ex military people. The military provides a lot of technical training, but it is often specific to certain weapon systems or they use terminology different than private industry. If you don't take this into account, you will reject resumes from veterans or decide during an interview that they are unqualified. Once you understand your bias, you can better communicate to determine they are in fact qualified, just not speaking your language. Or maybe they are 80% of the way there and just need some on-the-job training to translate their military training to non military systems. I fear what is happening now that resume screening and even interviews are now widely done via AI. You'd think AI would not have the biases that humans have, but that's not the track record we're seeing from AI. Or if they try to write code to overcome the training bias, you get AI generated pictures of black Founding Fathers or female Popes. All that said, I do remember specifically one female engineer I hired from a competitor, and one black engineer I hired who was ex Bell Labs, who turned out to be totally worthless. But hiring is not an exact science, who amongst us has never hired someone and regretted it. DEI or otherwise. -----Original Message----- From: AF <af-boun...@af.afmug.com> On Behalf Of Mike Hammett Sent: Sunday, March 23, 2025 4:43 PM To: AnimalFarm Microwave Users Group <af@af.afmug.com> Subject: Re: [AFMUG] OT Aviation But also, then it would have to be fair and not punitive. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bill Prince" <part15...@gmail.com> To: af@af.afmug.com Sent: Friday, March 21, 2025 1:45:11 PM Subject: Re: [AFMUG] OT Aviation They attack "DEI" because no one knows what it's about. If they had called it "fairness in hiring", they would have a tougher time attacking it. How would it sound to say you're against fairness? Similar (but different) with Antifa, which was shortening of anti-fascist. If they said we're in favor of fascism, it might not have played a well. bp <part15sbs{at}gmail{dot}com> On 3/21/2025 11:02 AM, Josh Luthman wrote: DEI has been a target for Trump + Republicans the last few months. The requirements to be a commercial pilot are the SAME for all races and genders. Stop parroting what the alt right is saying. There will be an investigation. They probably check for intoxication, enough sleep, distractions, etc. If they're both straight, white males, then what? What does Maga have to say about that? Mistakes, crime, whatever are bad no matter who the person is. Why does the right always bring race, sexuality, ethnicity, gender into everything? It's weird and cult like behavior.
