I still can’t wrap my head around how they get ∞x∞ MIMO and 1.21 gigawattsbits 
from 5 MHz of spectrum.  I understand MU-MIMO and beamsteering and all that, 
but when they start tossing around stuff like 8x8 MIMO I don’t see how you get 
that many orthogonal signals on the same frequency.

 

But for maximum spectral efficiency, I assume they use more than 1 
polarization, whether V&H or +45 & -45.

When GSM began they started using vertical polarization. But as the need for 
capacity arose antennas changed to slant 45 X polarization.
