Good point. Also I’m puzzled about reports that Starlink intends to apply for RDOF money. Isn’t that for buildout not actual customers? And the satellites fly over the entire earth, not a specific rural area. I’m not understanding how they would even apply for RDOF. Just by promising coverage in those areas? I guess Hughesnet and Viasat got CAF money.
The other thing that might save us is the marketing challenge. Does Starlink intend to sell online? And will it be a customer self-install, or will they need local installers. Seems like key to their success will be marketing partnerships. Not saying WISPs would be the answer, thinking more along the lines of sat TV companies or phone companies. Some reports actually give an edge to Amazon in the LEO satellite Internet space because of Amazon’s ability to bundle with Prime. Teslas were so sought-after they basically sold themselves, Musk didn’t really need local Tesla dealerships. I’m not sure he’s ever had a venture where he needed good marketing and sales. Not sure how the average consumer, especially rural consumer, will deal with the term satellite Internet. Ignoring the terrible reputation from Hughesnet, I’d say half my customers already call our antenna a “satellite”. Plus when they say “we’ve got satellite” it means TV. Expensive TV they want to ditch for streaming. Now ask them to understand the difference between geostationary and LEO, and brains will be exploding like the aliens in Mars Attacks. The flashy speed numbers will attract some people, although many people don’t understand that latency is like golf, less is better. People are also conditioned that when they hear “satellite”, the speed doesn’t matter, it’s the data cap that’ll get you. So it’s really had to predict how this will hit us. Wipe us out and take all our customers? Or free us from struggling to serve the people in mini forests on low ground by the creek? A lot may depend on price. And what early adopters think of it. Most sales in our area are through word-of-mouth. The Facebook moms will make or break you. My only real concern is loose state and federal funding eligibility. Not the buildout, but the monthly service cost. Our governor here offered the buildout dough on top of the caf buildout areas, more rules, same areas. With internet as a utility mindset, there is no telling how much money the suits will give out for service fees. I would not be shocked if we started seeing 100mbps speeds with sub 30ms pings as the normal. Hoping I am wrong but prepare for the worst. Hopefully they price that package somewhere around $200/month and I'll be fine. The other thing is how much is thunderstorms and clouds going to affect the quality of the Sat connections? Snow on the receiver? Hopefully its not near as reliable as fixed wireless.
