Sending in US Marshals (and I presume other federal agents) in unmarked vehicles and unmarked uniforms is doing nothing but adding fuel to the fire; and it also shows a lack of huevos.

No doubt the only difference between cops and criminals in some cases is luck. If someone with a predisposition to cracking heads manages to not get arrested as a youth due to dumb luck, they can find a place being a cop.I am amused at times how police unions freak out at experiments proposed by Berkeley. Sure, if it works they will lose some membership...Can it all be summed up as some cops are Sheriff Taylor and others are Barney Fife?Perhaps too many of them work for Boss Hogg.If more were like Sandra Bullock getting frisked could be more pleasant. From: Adam MoffettSent: Monday, July 20, 2020 6:38 AMTo: af@af.afmug.comSubject: Re: [AFMUG] OT - politicalThe cause is that some cops behave poorly and maybe we can do better than that.
- Some of them are clearly racist. There is strong statistical and experimental evidence of this. This shouldn't actually be a controversial thing to point out since all cops are humans and some humans are racist.
- Some of them are too quick to violence.
- Some of them actively defend and cover for their coworkers who have been too violent or racist.
- A lot of them look the other way.
- A lot of departments have a lot of unnecessary hardware.
Some of the protesters are hooligans. Some of the cops are hooligans too. There's plenty of video evidence to support both of those statements.
Look at the number of people killed by police per capita in the USA vs other countries. We're not as bad as the Philippines or Syria, but we do have more people killed by police than any of our Western allies do, both in absolute total and per capita. I can't accept the idea that there's no real problem here and it's just "the left" trying to trick us into voting a certain way.

I guess so they can have bragging rights later on. I believe them to be disingenuous and hypocritical. This says it far better than I can:“Peaceful protesters hold signs in support of other people” doesn’t make the news. So most likely you are thinking of a small percentage of the protesters, because they are the ones who make the news. I’m not saying it’s “fake news”, just that boring news doesn’t get ratings and advertising dollars.
Also not sure what your threshold is for “misbehaving”. Spray painting graffiti on government buildings? Probably only a few people are doing that, but still, is that anarchy? Throwing rocks or burning stuff, yes, that probably crosses a line. But holding up a speaker? News like this, if true (as seems likely), is disturbing:
What puzzles me is why you single out white kids and a noble cause as being childish. Do you expect them to only go out and demonstrate for causes that directly benefit them or people who look like them? Are we that polarized and selfish now?
I live in a suburb that is mostly white middle class. But I am seeing a lot of yard signs that say “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” That’s probably the sentiment of _most_ of the protesters in Portland. If the cops can go all Judge Dredd on George Floyd, maybe that threatens all of us, even if the street judges aren’t coming for people that look like us. Yet.
Maybe think back to 1978 when some Nazis wanted to march in heavily Jewish Skokie, IL and the ACLU defended their right to free speech. Pretty much nobody wanted marching Nazis, but if you take away their rights, whose rights are next? (But I still laugh at the Illinois Nazis scene in Blues Brothers.)

I don't want to encourage political threads on AFMUG but...
Some people just want to watch the world burn. Current situations in the world mean that those people can tag onto a reason or (pretext to) join a group or find support to help them in those desires. And somehow, a lot of those people live around Portland?

Not trying to break lent, but I am lacking understanding.
What are the young white kids rioting about in Portland?
I am from Oregon, I remember protests in the 60s and 70s over Vietnam.
I also remember a line of State Police walking through a park downtown and busting heads of those that did not clear out. Actually one of my first telco bosses had been one of those State Bull Cops.
Are young white kids just aching for a chance at anarchy? I don’t get it.
Misbehaving while trying to wrap some kind of noble cause around you is pretty childish.
