And exactly why when someone says they want to watch TV over a vpn I strongly discourage it. I cannot stop it but I know there is a big wiley coyote sledge hammer somewhere down the road...

Probably why people were hacking Mikrotik routers to place proxy servers on them. And why there are proxy server / VPN blacklists.

You'd have to have an IP in that region to watch outside of your market. They check every time you launch it. Not hard to do, but I'm guessing the average Joe wouldn't know how.

Because it breaks things like blackout for NFL games. NFL can't
charge you for NFL network if you can watch the game you want on the
local channel to the game if you are out of market. This causes
stress on the arrangement say CBS and the NFL have. You could say
FU its free... but the DMZ's and FCC licenses never envisioned that
content being on the other side of the country.

Also your viewership isn't tracked by Nielsen, so it won't increase
ad buy revenue for the station. If anything it would hurt the local
affiliate if your watching CBS in New York City instead of CBS in
Dallas. If CBS allowed it, the affiliates would be upset.

Also there is a strong slippery slope argument they feel, just like
many do on gun control or prayer in the schools. If they cede
ground to IPTV streaming, they fear the entire value of the local
transmission rights will be diminished (and those licenses are
valuable... don't have doubt in that).

What I can't figure out, is why do they even care? Aren't all
they doing is providing the local OTA channels to the same area
that they're available to OTA? it's not like they're giving
people access to channels in the wrong market... it seems like
the broadcasters should be happy they're making it easier for
        people to watch their commercials...
