I met factotum, and read that paper, after a couple years of slogging through multi-layered authentication implemented as dynamic libraries in C, including the fun of trying to point a debugger at static functions inside dynamically-loaded pluggable protocol modules, in code bases "managed" via libtool, etc.
To my eyes it is one of the clearest examples of how being able to ask the right question is more important than being able to strap more thrust onto the nearest brick.
