OK, I just tested with Sol 10 U5 (fully patched as of 2 weeks ago), and
Sun's cpio _does_ preserve ZFS ACLs. So does Sun's cp, FYI. Although
cp's man page is unclear about how to preserve both ACLs and extended
attributes.

So for now I'm forced to grit my teeth and recommend Sun's cpio for full
backups. Just make sure you include the options -P (for ACLs) and -@
(for extended attributes) if you want a full backup. You probably also
want to test what restores look like from a non-Sun cpio (I haven't done
this).
