are actually specified using the Options|Preferences dialog box,
Tools, "Helper applications" section. See

In order to modify the helper app for PDF files that are opened via
the «Browse files» tools, please open the Preferences dialog box,
select the "Helper applications" section, select "PDF files" then
click Edit. See attached screenshot.
So basically you are saying that I should use the option that «We also
tried» (se above). And, yes that worked. Thanks.
Well, in the «We also tried» sentence, you also wrote "but that did not
affect the Browser Files tool", which is incorrect. So I had to clarify
this.
However, the option that produces the best results, seems to be the
option «Use default viewer». (For the record, I also removed the
settings for PDF viewing in the Helper apps section of the preferences.)
For instane, unlike the other options, the default viewer option does
not cause several instances of the Preview.app to be opened (a new
instance everything I click to view a file.)
I would, therefore, prefer to always use the «default viewer».
Sure. We understand this.
However (sic!), the «use default viewer» option, seems only to be
avialable from the «Browse Files» tools. (That is: It is not availale
from the Helper App preferences/settings.) And, worse, the option to
«Always open in this helper app» is not available for the default viewer
option. Thus, I must, each time I open a PDF, manually select «default
viewer».
It thus seems that XXE lacks the option to set the default viwer to
always be used. Or is there something that I have not gotten?
You are right. There is indeed something wrong in XXE when you prefer to
always use the default viewer for a given file type. More generally, the
Helper Apps feature should be more convenient to use. We'll try to
improve this feature in the next version of XXE.
