One other thing I noticed: on Windows, version 8.0.0 was installed in
the "C:\Program Files (x86)\XMLmind_XML_Editor 7" directory. I was
expecting it to go in "C:\Program Files (x86)\XMLmind_XML_Editor 8". Is
it in the 7 one on purpose?

No, sorry, there is no replacement.
Moreover suppressing this command introduced a bug in XXE v8. You
cannot use the "Search" tool anymore when recording a macro-command,
as this functionality leveraged the "search" command.
We'll restore the "search" command in XXE v8.1. So please wait for the
next release to adapt your add-on to XXE v8.
This new "search" command will probably be slightly simplified in
terms of *GUI* (just like the "xpathSearch" command found in v8,
http://www.xmlmind.com/xmleditor/_distrib/doc/commands/xpathSearch.html).
Its only use will be in macros.
