The idea of a "normal" person paying any amount of money larger than
$4.99 for any kind of software is for us, hard to believe. That's why
all our products target companies and not persons. Of course, we may
be wrong.

For whatever it's worth: In the past few years, I bought two programs
for my personal PC that each cost ~$30.

Personally, I never did this. Always used freewares. However my company never hesitates to spend hundreds of dollars in software when needed too.

I think more important than the
_initial_ cost for an individual is the prospect of having to pay a
yearly licensing fee, so that a $30 program ends up costing 10 times
that much.

We don't like the concept of subscription for a software, e.g. Microsoft Office 365 Home at $99.99 per year.

Note that the price of XXE is not an yearly licensing fee. It includes upgrades during one year at no additional cost, but the license itself is perpetual and nothing forces the customer to renew her/his purchase at a discounted price to benefit from an extra year of upgrades.

I also happen to know that there are a number of linguists doing grammar
documentation who are using an ancient version of XXE that was released
as freeware. I wouldn't be surprised if some of them might be willing
to pay a reasonable sum to upgrade to a more recent version, perhaps
even more so if it were a one time charge, rather than a yearly charge.

The ancient version they use is probably OK, except when they'll upgrade their computer and/or OS. When this will happen, XXE is likely to have problems.

Note that we sell all our products half the normal price to educational organizations and by extent, to students and to scholars (having a .edu or similar well known email address). But I don't know if 315/2 = $157.5 is a reasonable price for your fellow linguists.

That said, in the app world, the price of software tends to be more like
the $4.99 you mention... But I certainly don't think of XXE as being in
the same world as a phone app.
