For whatever it's worth: In the past few years, I bought two programs
for my personal PC that each cost ~$30. I think more important than the
_initial_ cost for an individual is the prospect of having to pay a
yearly licensing fee, so that a $30 program ends up costing 10 times
that much.
I also happen to know that there are a number of linguists doing grammar
documentation who are using an ancient version of XXE that was released
as freeware. I wouldn't be surprised if some of them might be willing
to pay a reasonable sum to upgrade to a more recent version, perhaps
even more so if it were a one time charge, rather than a yearly charge.
That said, in the app world, the price of software tends to be more like
the $4.99 you mention... But I certainly don't think of XXE as being in
the same world as a phone app.
