Thank you, Peter. I found another solution : using \marginpar (together with the package 'marginparhack' to ensure the marginpars are not floated away) and draw a vrule of some depth in the marginpar. I have to adjust the depth at hand, but this is easy. In this way, there is no more problem with XeTeX and I can keep my Frutiger fonts. But another question arise: I would like the marginpars to be always on the left side (this is where revision bars are always put) and I cannot see any means to ensure that. This seems to be impossible with the twoside option (in book.cls), and with the oneside option, marginpars are always on the right. Trying \reversemargin par with oneside has the only effect of making the marginpars disappear. I could use an \llap to swing the vrule across the page, but this looks rather risky. Does anyone know another solution? It would be better if this solution could also work with twoside.
