I have not yet solved this issue of the com issue, but I have some new 
information in trying to better understand the problem.
I also have a USB Logitech (C920) webcam connected to the Pi, I use 
FSWEBCAM to grab an image every 5 minutes via a cron job.
If I disconnect the USB webcam, the system runs with no issues for days, 
but I soon as I plug the webcam in then weewx usually crashes within 6 
hours.
I also tried adding udev rules for defining my FTDI USB -serial converter 
but it did not work following the steps from the weewx wiki, I also found 
other info that said to place the rules under /etc/udev/rules.d/ of which I 
tried that also failed. I also did testing on a Pi 2 and Pi 3 both had the 
same results.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
