My WeeWX runs on a RPi attached to a Fine Offset WH1080 and is connected by HDMI cable to a TV in the bedroom. I mostly refer to a web page to check on the weather but my wife uses the the console but often has trouble reading the dim display and sometimes gets it to light up inadvertently and set the thing off beeping indicating that it's ready to make changes to various settings. I tend to use the TV when doing some work on the Pi -- it takes forever to switch between TV and HDMI it's unreadable at a distance.
(A skin designed for distant viewing would be interesting; perhaps forcibly lowering the screen resolution would do the needful; I haven't tried) What would be nice, I think, is something like a 7-10 inch touchscreen on the back of which the Pi could be mounted, which would would be dark until touched. Then perhaps I could just put the console in a drawer and drill a hole to feed the USB cable out. This might also solve the problem of the Pi's flashing lights.Yes, I was dumb enough to put the Pi in a nice clear acrylic case but my other half wasn't impressed after dark and so it lives behind the TV under a pair of black underpants :-) I looked at a few screens and nothing jumped out at me. As it happens I have an Nexus 7 Android tablet which may be approaching retirement (depending on whether its prospective replacement is worth the upgrade; we'll know soon) and which I could use on a stand -- I'd have to rig up a way of recharging it on a timer to avoid charging it continuously. It needs to be turned on by pressing a slightly stiff button on the side, so not quite as convenient as an Apple style home button, but a lot faster than waiting for the Sony TV to warm up and switch to HDMI (and which still needs either a keyboard or mouse). Anyone got any recommendations for a replacement console? As an aside, it would be great if it was possible to plug a dongle into the Pi to replace the FO console entirely. I wonder what the chances are of someone being able to make such a thing? Related Q. I've also wondered about buying a 2nd system as a possible workaround for the occasional USB lockup to which the FO is prone -- to avoid losing data (and to have some spare parts). Is there any reason two consoles couldn't be tuned to pick up data? If not it would be great to be able to disconnect one and reset it and then connect the second and have WeeWX dedupe overlapping records. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "weewx-user" group.
