This probably doesn't help a whole lot but since it's alphabetical, you can 
almost always insert anywhere in the sequence. For example '11_' comes 
before '2_'. Here's another example of a sorted list: ['111_', '11_', 
'11a1_', '1_', '1a1_', '1a_', '2_']
