Friends,
Later this year will be the 20th anniversary of the WBMUTBB Chapter.
Related to that, I've been looking through the archives of old messages
to/from the Digest.
I found a message from November 22, 1994 from me, Allan Newsome, to the
WBMUTBB Digest. This was just about a month after my wife Jan and I had
made our second trip to Mayberry Days in Mt. Airy, NC. It was my first
year doing "Floyd." I hope you enjoy this article from the Historical
Society re-published in entirety.

Hey Folks,
I figured it was time for me to tell you all about my trip
to the "real" Mayberry. I thought that I already had but
there may be quite a few of y'all that weren't around back
when I told. So, here goes.
While that Jan and I were in Mt. Airy, NC for Mayberry Day's
we traveled up the Blue Ridge Parkway to a place now known
as 'Meadows of Dan, Virginia.' It's located between
Milepost 180-181 on the Parkway. To what am I referring?
The Mayberry Trading Post is what.
It's sitting off the parkway with it's back to the parkway
on State Route 602 but you can see it just fine. It's open
7 day's a week from 8 to 5 and they have all kinds of stuff
there. Everything from home made jelly to hand made quilts.
If you're every in Mt. Airy, you might want to think about
traveling up there sometime.
The Mayberry Trading Post was built in 1892 an acted as
the "Mayberry Creek Post Office" from October 4, 1892 till
September 5, 1895 when the name was changed to "Mayberry".
The post office service was ended on October 14, 1922. They
still have the letter slots for the mail in the back room of
the Trading Post and you can walk back there and look
around.
"And yes, Andy's mother Geneva Nunn Griffith was born in the
little community of Mayberry, Virginia." This is a quote
from a publication of the Mount Airy News named "Simple
Pleasures". This was the first time I'd ever seen it in
print that Andy's mom was for sure born in Mayberry, VA.
The Mayberry Trading Post is about 35 miles from Mt. Airy
but I think it's worth the drive because you not only see
the trading post but also Mayberry Creek which is very near
the Trading Post. It's not much of a waterway but it is
is a good picture to stand in front of the Mayberry Creek
sign.
Just a little more to add to the appeal of Mt. Airy
(Mayberry), NC.
Happy Thanksgiving and my God bless each of you with
happiness and joy all year long.
