This may not be relevant to this particular problem, but I have noticed that
you will see only a black screen when accessing VNC server running on
Windows XP if there is user already logged on, but not active - either
because of user switching or because the screen saver has cut in. In some
cases you will get the opportunity to log on to Windows XP, but as soon as
you do, the screen goes black. I think this must be something to do with the
way XP handles screen buffers for multiple users. Perhaps the address of the
console buffer is moved around and VNC is left looking at an unused area of
memory.
