I added -viewonly switch to Xvnc (tested on RH Linux).

This request comes about trice a year. May be some time it will be
added to AT&T VNC ?

As to the question of what can be done with such X display (i.e. not
interactive) - you can run displays such as top and xload (of course
you must start them in background and with the exact geometry). I
run 2 such virtual Xs which display data from 11 different machines.
