Not sure about Linux, but on my Sun Solaris 8 systems I had problems displaying the CDE fonts for login and in "dt" apps under Xvnc. Solution was to run the font server service from inetd and invoke Xvnc with the "-fp tcp/localhost:7100" in my case from /etc/dt/config/Xservers but should work the same from Xstart. Setting the fontpath alone is not sufficient -- although the required fonts must all be found in the fontpath. If you can display everything correctly on the local Xserver then you do not have a fontpath problem, you just need to serve them to Xvnc.

I think Xvnc *IS* analogous to a Xserver running locally on a PC as it is a foreign X service that does not run on the console like the native Xserver on display :0.
