There's also a company that makes 'fake' video cards that emulate an MDA or
VGA in text mode and send the data to a serial port.  A VNC-based version of
that which could also do graphics modes would be incredibly useful, but
probably also much more expensive.  (Not that the serial-based ones are
cheap!)

That's the one I was thinking of. As you say it could not be called cheap
by any definition of the word that I know AND it uses a proprietry viewer
(Windows only).
