OK then, strip out some of the complex functionality. 

Assume I have a linux server in a colocation facility. It doesn't use any
graphical apps anyway. All I really need is keyboard and monitor control
so, if need be, I can see an error message on the screen (like when
updating to a new kernel, and missing some critical component, causing the
machine to hang at reboot). 

There are already devices that let you extend the keyboard, monitor, and
mouse functions (sometimes serial and audio as well) over regular CAT5
cable (using all four pairs no doubt). I just want to do the same thing
over the IP...
