Hi, I don't want to get into a flame war with this. I don't know how to do the wallpaper feature, however, I believe you will be treading on dodgy ground if you apply this.
Sure, you can have a policy in place, but the workforce have a legal right. You can log information, but you cannot read their emails without a court order. The same as with spying. (You mentioned that the wallpaper disappearing defeats the object). Your workforce have a right to privacy. If it is used as an admin tool, then why do you need to stop the wallpaper changing? How do your workforce know of they are being watched? It may be in your policy, but it is not within the law. Many people will use full screen, so they won't see the wallpaper change anyway. Non savvy users will not know that wallpaper being removed is due to them being spied upon. Sure, you can use the logs as evidence, read emails with a court order, but if it is internet pages you are looking for, then just look in the temporary internet files folder or their history. (You would be treading on dodgy ground with this as well). Your users will need to give their permission which cannot be obtained user duress (such as a contract of employment) to view their screens. Many companies allow their PCs to be used during lunchtime or after work. These can be for updating CVs, personal email (web mail, such as what you are doing right now) or writing intimate love letters. If you have proxy logs telling you that someone is looking at unsavoury sites, then you may be able to gather more evidence after the event, such as looking at the web-cache. (Incidentally, the proxy usually caches as well). Personally, If I was asked by a company to do this, I would refuse, even if it meant my contract. This is violating your rights and would be enough for a case of unfair dismissal. It would also mean that you could be very well implicated in a legal argument for being a party to this. I have actually gone as far as saying no to a company on a project on the grounds of data protection, which the companies own data protection people upheld. Get legal advice to do what your company are asking you to do. Incidentally, the flash on your website is distracting. In my opinion, it doesn't do anything to enhance your site. Regards.
