Yes, W98 is crap.  No real need to discuss that.

As for some sort of event overload, I doubt it.  The system has plenty
of power power and memory for the tasks at hand.

The system running as a server is a recent HP Pavillion.  800 Mhz and
256 Mb.  The system is running VNC and one, or perhaps 2 other
applications, has one disk, one Ethernet and one IBM network adapter.
256 color and SVGA screen mode mean the video card is not working at
more than 5% capacity.

Sitting and watching the usage meter, it hardly ever gets to 10%.

Something strange is crashing the system; hard to tell what.
