I was having all kinds of problems under Win98. The solution, much to
my surprise, was a new NIC, even though _no_ other network-related
program exhibited any problem.

Actually, the second card I tried had the same kinds of problems, but
instead of occurring within a few seconds (on my system) as they did
with the first card, they occurred after a minute or two. Trying a
third NIC solved the problem.

FWIW, the one that worked was a 3COM 10/100MHz. I forget exactly which
ones didn't work. I think that one was a 10Mbps Linksys (the first one,
with a stock Microsoft driver) and one was a Netgear 10/100 (the second
one, with a Netgear driver).
