Kurt: I'm afraid I don't know how to ping or access an open share. (I don't
know what an open share is.) Sorry to be so dense about this stuff. A few
years ago, I was able to us pcAnywhere, so I may have to go back to that if I
can't get this to work.

Here's what I'm doing...

For the purpose of testing and getting VNC to work, I have two PCs (Win98SE)
in my office. They are both connected to a small network through a hub.
There are a total of three PCs on the network. I connect to the Internet with
DSL. I have a SonicWall firewall between the hub and the DSL modem.

My use of WinVNC will ultimately be to connect my PC (Viewer) with another
Win98 PC in another city using dialup (Server). While I have DSL here, the
other PC only has dialup and the person using that PC does not use the
Internet. (Hard to believe, right!) Our goal is for me to be able to operate
the other PC in the other city. (I'm the viewer, they are the server -- I
think I've got this part right.)

For now, I've installed WinVNC on both PCs in my office. They both have NICs
connected to the network, but the also both have modems which I want to use to
test VNC.

THE SERVER:

On the Server PC, in Dialup Networking, I've done this:
Connection>Dialup Server
Allow caller access
Server type: -- I'm not sure what to select here??
--Default
--PPP
--WinNT
Advanced Options -- I'm not sure what to select here??
--Enable software compression
--Require encrypted password
Password Protection: I've left this blank
When I click "Apply," the status says "monitoring"

On the Server PC, I've clicked:
Administrative Tools>Install Default Registry Setting
Administrative Tools>Install WinVNC Services

If I hover the cursor over the white VNC icon in the system tray, it says:
http://10.0.0.2 That is the IP address for that machine on the network.

When I right-click the white VNC icon and select current user properties, the
defaults are set. I have entered a password. If I select Add New Client, I'm
not sure what to enter in the Initiate Outgoing Connection (Add New Client)
box.

At this point, I'm stuck on the Server machine.

Question: What is the difference between Admin>Install WinVNC Service and Run
WinVNC (App Mode)? It looks like the Admin>Install Svc will load VNC each
time Windows starts, but the Run VNC only runs it for the current session.
For my purposes, I will use the Run WinVNC option.

THE VIEWER:

I've made a dialup connection to dial the modem on the Server. In
Properties>Server Types, I've left everything at the default settings -- PPP,
log on to network, enable compression, Allowed Network protocols all checked
ON, TCP/IP settings all at default.

When I click this dialup connection, it will dial and the Server will answer.

Then, I click Run VNC Viewer OR Run VNC Viewer (Listen Mode) -- I'm not sure
which to use.

If I click Run VNC Viewer, the Connection Details box opens and asks for VNC
Server. I'm not sure what to put here. What about the options window?

This is where I'm stuck.

Frankly, I think I'm close, but I don't know where to go from here.

Thanks so much to anyone willing to give me a hand.

John.
