Janice,

I have run into this same problem. Only when I disconnected from the
server the first time, my screen colors and resolution would reset to
VGA. Then I couldn't reconnect until I changed them back on the server to
the defaults I had set (16 bit color, 800x600). This is how I fixed it.

While logged into the server as Administrator, set the default password.

Make sure that your desktop settings for the screen resolution are set 16
bit color (try 256 colors and see if it will work) and any resolution
higher than 640x480. There is a problem with VNC and the Windows 2000 VGA
driver/settings.

I have also set the following registry values. The first set of values has
to do with resetting the screen resolutions when the client contacts the
server. I haven't experimented with them enough yet to turn them on. The
second set locks out the user from shutting down or looking at/changing the
properties of the VNC Server.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ORL\WinVNC3]
"DisableWallpaper"="No"
"DisablePattern"="No"
"DisableFontSmoothing"="No"
"ResWidth"="0"
"ResHeight"="0"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORL\WinVNC3\Default]
"AllowShutdown"=dword:00000000
"AllowProperties"=dword:00000000

Hope this helps.
