Bill, See my earlier email for more info, but the issue is that your hard wired desktops are behind a router or firewalled internet connection. The IP you need to type in on the laptop is the Public IP of your home computers. To see what this ip is visit the IPinfo site or www.whatismyip.com------on the Desktop.
You need to tell the viewer program where the desktop is so you need its IP. Since the desktop's IP is like that of the laptop on wifi its not the one displayed in network neighborhood or by doing IP config, rather it is the IP of the router. In order for you to connect through the router you need to set up a port forward for port 5900.
