I am confused, in your other post you said that you the remote computer
is behind a firewall that you don't control. You mentioned that you
can't reach it with a telnet client. Then you said that you _can_ get a
login screen?

If you mean that you can't get to port 5900 on the remote server from
the local box, but you can access standard telnet port, then it is
probably the firewall blocking your request.

As to the default gateway. What I am referring to here, is that the
default gateway must know how to reach the other server. For instance,
if your client machine (viewer) is on Host A with network 10.100.1.4
and gateway 10.100.1.1, and the remote machine (server) is on Host B
with network 192.168.1.112, then the gateway (10.100.1.1) must have a
route to the 192.168.1.0 network. If you are not on the same subnet as
the server, then you will probably need to have the administrator of
the gateway machine (router perhaps) ensure that the route exists and
that you are allowed to access this machine through the remote
firewall.
