Hello Bill, You might try an app called Awareness, the Headphone App, which uses the mic to give you ambient sound while listening with headphones. It's very customizable in terms of how loud a sound needs to be for the mic to be triggered. There are a couple of problems, though. It only works with wired, not Bluetooth headphones, and it hasn't been updated for a year. Version 3.0 was promised for last fall, and it hasn't materialized.
