The first thing I would check is location services.
See what apps are requesting your location, and if you don't need them to,
switch their status to off.
Once that's done, check the notification settings, and see what apps are in
the notifications area, as those apps are constantly sending and receiving
data.
Thirdly, you check your mail push notifications, as that will tell you how
often mail is set to go retrieve new messages from your server.
Lastly, I would check the settings of all your apps and see if they're set
to download, or access phone resources on a regular basis, and shut those
down too if you don't need them to do so.
