Yes, you don't need a subscription to use the app itself. First of all, you can buy books from Audible at full price without a subscription and download them with the Audible app. Accessing books synced to your phone via iTunes is also no problem. At the top of the app are 3 tabs: Cloud: This shows any Audible books you purchased Device: This shows Audible books you purchased and downloaded to your device iTunes: This is what you want, it accesses books you synced to your device via iTunes. The current version of the Audible app is the best it has ever been. Voiceover support is 100% and fantastic and I think for listening to audio books it doesn't get much better. Your choices are 0.75x, 1x, 1.25x, 1.5x, 2x, 2.5x and 3x. You can also play MP3 files/books in the Downcast app and it also has speed control.
