You could replace the battery and see if that helps. I did this for my iphone 8. I paid $50 to have it done, and I used that phone for my back-up phone as you are considering. I did this a little over a year ago, and the phone is still going strong. If you do not want to go that route, you could also just get an inexpensive wireless charging bank and use that to keep the phone's charge up. I found one at walmart for $12 and it works great and I can charge lotss of things on it.
