The seller was only asking $50 for the iPhone 8. I didn’t really want to spend
$200 for a phone for him. He’s pretty happy with his little flip phone, except
that texting is slow. We only needed it so he can reach parents and maybe a
friend or two. I’ll just keep looking around to find an unlocked option.

Buy him a phone which was not released 8 years ago and is long past its best
before date.
Even if you get it unlocked, you may end up with a phone where the first thing
you have to do is spend money for a new battery and finally, the original
version of iOS which was on the iPhone 8 was iOS 11 and the last version of iOS
which can run on an iPhone 8 is iOS 16. This means more and more apps may not
be able to run on an iPhone 8 because support for iOS 16 is being dropped.
If you don’t mind saying, but what is the asking price for this iPhone 8? I
sure hope it’s not more than $40 or $50 and as I said, even for that you might
want to consider something like an iPhone SE 3rd generation which was released
in the spring of 2022. Here in Canada you can get refurbished models of that
phone for around $250 Canadian from Best Buy, Walmart etc., I would imagine in
the US you can get them for well below $200 and if you buy a refurbished phone
from Apple, Best Buy, Walmart etc., you can be sure it has a new battery and is
otherwise in good shape.

Subject: locked phone question

Hi
Hoping someone can guide me... My carrier is PureTalk, which runs on the AT&T
network. I have the opportunity to buy an old iPhone 8 for my pre-teen son at a
nicely low price. I called my carrier with the IMEI number and was told it’s a
phone locked by AT&T, so the rep said it wouldn’t work. Does this mean that
putting a PureTalk sim card in it just doesn’t’ work? Is there a way to get
AT&T to unlock it since it’s a really old phone and I was not the original
owner? The person selling it to me is not savvy on this either…
