I don't keep mine on automatic. I have skipped some of the updates, whenever I hear complaints about them. An update reminder comes up sometimes on my Home Page, I just flick to later, and it goes away.

In here is where the settings are for automatic downloading and updating. I don't have a pending update so I can't say what to do about a Cancel button but, only how to get to the automatic settings.
