I have really learned to like the vertical scroll bar. When there are multiple pages just flicking through them is much easier than flicking with 3 fingers to get there. Sometimes it gets in the way, but I find if I go out of the page I am on and back in I can move it a little. These minor problems are not worth the loss of the bar in my opinion. It is like the index in contacts to move to a letter. Very handy to put you close to what you want in a list.

Actually, that is from the speak selection setting. If you never want that, go to Settings, Accessibility, Spoken Content, and turn it off. In there is also the speak screen where you can have it read to you without VoiceOver. The hints/explanations are just after each item there in settings.
