If you unlock your phone you can use it with almost any cell phone carrier in the world. For instance, when I travel outside the U.S. to visit another country, I remove the AT&T sim card and use a sim card of a local carrier in the country i am visiting. This way if i use my phone i will be making local calls, instead of paying loads of money for roaming calls to AT&T.if your phone is locked to your carrier, you can only use it with this carrier, you have no flexibility.
