I will explain what happened to me in case it gives some ideas of situations to avoid.

I restored my phone from a back-up that was apparently quite old. I had a list, but none of the dates were spoken. I chose the top one thinking it would be the latest.

When I went to the app store to make sure I had all apps, I saw that there were several updates. I chose to update all. Now, my wireless is fine, but had trouble with 40 updates apparently. I just never thought something else would kick in.

I normally have cellular data turned off. I didn't think to check on my new phone whether it was off or on, a mistake I will not repeat for sure.

Take care,
Lois

Hi Alan,
You would need to monitor this of course, but I think that you would
probably be ok leaving the wifi assist feature on given that it only
utilizes cellular data when it sees that the wifi connection is weak.

I was somewhat concerned about WI-FI assist. My wife and I share a bucket

Fifteen gigs between us seems to me to be plenty. Do I need to be concerned
if I leave WI-FI assist turned on or am I probably ok?

With my new data plan, I have so much data that I don't care if Wi-Fi
assist is on. In fact, I like the idea. I think we have the best of both
worlds here with the ability to turn it off if we don't wanted. They
certainly didn't hide the fact that the feature exist. It's been all over
in the mainstream press that this Wi-Fi assist exists and they tell us
what it does. So, it's up to us to leave it on or turn it off.

Hi,

I've definitely been in situations where the Wi-Fi turned out to be
inadequate. I would have liked my phone to use data in those situations,
so I'm glad this feature is an option. Our plan has a lot more data than
we actually use, though, so it won't matter if I end up using more data
than usual. If I were on a tight data plan, I'd be very glad to have the
option to turn this feature off.

Best,
Anna

I turned this off as well. If I am connected to wifi I want my phone to
only use that, if I have wifi off, then it can use the cell data
connection, I don't want my device deciding what to use, I guess I am
somewhat of a control freak when it comes to my devices, but I don't
like when they take things in to their own hands.

I read this story using one of my local television station's app on my
iPhone, and thought everybody should know about this. I will post the
link to the story at the end. IOS 9 contains something called WiFi
assist, which is meant to boost a weak WiFi signal by supplementing it
with your lte data. This seems to me to be a back door way to run up
one's data bill, so the phone companies can collect extra money , being
that it is turned on by default. I turned it off. Go to settings,
cellular, and find it near the bottom of the long list of things that
can access one's cellular data. I think it should be turned off by
default. Perhaps I am being overly paranoid.
