Nero reports no errors, but when I try to play the DVD, the video
quality is terrible, usually freezing after a few frames. I *do*
get the DVD menu, and I can navigate the menu, but playing the
video doesn't really work, on any computer.

Don't know. I've been using DVD+R, if it matters. Not sure if Nero
has a "verify" option. I can write data DVDs fine from the host
Ubuntu. I haven't tried writing video DVDs from Ubuntu because all
the Linux video programs I found were crap. (Not that I spent a lot
of time looking.)
