The length of 18.6 kB suggests that there's something in the file, but for some reason OpenOffice isn't recognizing it as an OpenOffice file.
What exactly is the name of the file that you're double-clicking on? (If you're using Windows, first make sure in File Explorer, under the View tab, that the 'File name extensions' box is checked.) Again, do you have timed backups enabled? (Under Tools > Options > Load/Save > General, the 'Save AutoRecovery information ...' option.)
