Go ahead and make fun of phonics, especially when you consider how many exceptions there are in English spelling and pronunciation. Neither my sister nor I speak Hebrew, but we both know the Hebrew alphabet and can read written Hebrew even though we don't know what the words mean. I'm badly out of practice, because I don't go to services very often, but when I was in my twenties (about forty years ago) I could sight-read Hebrew out loud as easily as I did English. Try doing *that* with whole-word reading!
