When booting simply hit 'e' for edit when the kernel selection screen shows.  
Then move down to the "linux" line with the kernel you're going to boot and add 
a 3 to the end.  Then just hit F10 to continue to boot.

What I then do in this situation is login as myself and enter "startx" at the 
command line.  This generally points me in the right direction.
