Is the machine actually *frozen*, or is it just not going into graphical mode? I'm having that problem as well, using the proprietary nvidia driver. With nouveau, the last kernel that let me run graphically was 3.6.11 (for nouveau the machine actually freezes up completely, I can't ssh or even ping it).
