Gnome no longer supports X11, and I think startx/xinit may default to X. Gnome seems to rely on user/systemd services to start wayland/X11 and the X11 service files don't appear to be there anymore.
I dug through it for a good day and concluded there was no way to work around gnome's decision to change the default to not support X11. I am now using Mate as I could use wayland if I could get RDP to actually work (replacing VNC), but RDP+gnome seems like a disaster. If it works then it works, but if/when does not work the errors are total useless and/or no one knows what the error means and/or how to fix it.
