It works, it doesn't... sounds like a drive going bad.
I've got an internal DVD drive that seems like it doesn't like being
squeezed by the PC case. Unfortunately that's how the case works
(gripping drives by pressure, not screws). Tested by extracting the
drive, and then it worked fine, and worked again (then and for some
time) when put back (though I haven't done more tests much later). I
also gave the cables a good stress test, with no change. And I took
its covers off just to check the lube on the rails for the laser sled
were fine (it was).

Yeah. I don't think it's disc, but I'm uncertain. Bios? Firmware?
Connections? Hardware (the drive)? I don't know. It's a 12+ year old
desktop with a newer hard drive (8 years ago). I'm eager to retire it.
I'm getting there. ... slowly.
