It works, it doesn't... sounds like a drive going bad. I've got an internal DVD drive that seems like it doesn't like being squeezed by the PC case. Unfortunately that's how the case works (gripping drives by pressure, not screws). Tested by extracting the drive, and then it worked fine, and worked again (then and for some time) when put back (though I haven't done more tests much later). I also gave the cables a good stress test, with no change.
