ddrescue lets you read and continue reading from the device even if a read 
fails, unlike
dd that will just stop if it gets a failed read.

You can simply try "dd" to start with. If you get errors also check log / 
journalctl
output for errors.

Also check "lsblk" output.

blu-ray discs already have a lot of error recovery built into them, so ddrescue 
might not
help much. If the disc shows up and you can't read it, it could be an issue 
with the
hardware itself. Be sure to also try using another bluray device (if you 
haven't already,
not sure exactly what you've tried so far).

No you don't need to mount a device and should not mount it if you want to 
write to it
using dd.

I think open for writing to a device might fail if it's mounted but I don't 
have a device
to test it on.
