Along with the willingness to apply whatever intelligence you possess.  I
once taught
a calculus service course for the Commerce Dept.  Amazing how many (always
male!)
students asked me what was the least work required to pass the course.
Women who
had reached university usually wanted to get as much as possible out of the
course.

One of my colleagues, a statistician,  proposed that stats packages include
a test to
ensure the user understood the methods they wanted to use.
