OK so it's just using the "top-level of the file system" (the default subvolume
that has no name, can't be deleted, can be snapshot, is created at mkfs time) for the
installation. No root or home subvolumes. Everything is just a directory. And no
compression.

This can happen with "advanced-custom" partitioning (a.k.a. blivet) in the gtk-ui version of the
installer. The "custom" and "manual" partitioning options do produce a different layout
with separate subvolumes for each mount point. It's possible to use advanced custom to get subvolumes
assigned to mountpoints too but it is not too obvious how without fiddling, and it's real easy to just assign
`/` to the btrfs top-level.
He used the advanced configuration option in the installer. / and /home
were created on different drives.
