Does not the current kernel keep running until there is a reboot? Yes, I know 
it is recommended to reboot with a kernel update but my desktop and server run 
for months  before a reboot.

Anyway, it is still not clear to me why the reboot is needed before an upgrade 
as per the instructions. What happens if this is not done?
