Considering its origins, I wouldn't be the slightest bit surprised that it's abnormal data, and served with the wrong mimetype. Look at the email source, and see what headers precede the attachment. Also save the file, and examine it separately. Microsoft mail products have been notorious for attaching files with the completely wrong descriptions, just expecting that the receiver would figure it out anyway. That's how they worked, ignoring MIME, assessing the content, then doing whatever was normal for that file (such as executing executable attachments, like viruses and trojans that were falsely identified as MIDI files in the sending mail).
